PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend

Fall into Love with an Adoptable Pet at PetSmart Charities® National Adoption Weekend, September 13-15
_________________________________________________________

PHOENIX – This time of year, a few things are certain: the days get shorter, leaves change color, and kids return to school. But, did you know September may also be the perfect time of year to add a new companion to your home? You can do just that by adopting at the PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend, Sept. 13-15 at your neighborhood PetSmart® store in Statesville, NC. Not only will you gain a loving friend through adoption, but you’ll also save the life of a deserving pet.

More than 2,000 adoption partners will be on-site at all 1,300 PetSmart stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to help you fall head over paws with a new furry friend, whether you’re a feline fanatic or devoted to dogs.

Not only will you save a life by adopting this fall, but PetSmart Charities will also reward all participating local adoption partners, including Paws and Claws Feline Rescue; each will receive $35 in adoption-reward grants for every pet adopted at this event.

This year in North America, an estimated eight million pets will end up in shelters and half of those – or about 11,000 adoptable pets every day – will be euthanized.

When you adopt, you save more than one pet’s life. Adoption makes room at the shelter, so more pets can come in and stay longer, giving them a better chance at finding a home.

“Collaborating with our adoption partners throughout North America allows us help find homes for thousands of deserving pets each National Adoption Weekend,” said Jan Wilkins, executive director, PetSmart Charities, Inc. “By focusing our efforts in local communities to achieve the greatest impact, PetSmart Charities has become a leader in pet adoptions – finding homes for more than 5.5 million dogs and cats since 1994.”

How to Adopt

In addition to the PetSmart store in Statesville, NC, you can visit the PetSmart Charities’ adoption center inside any PetSmart store in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. To learn more about the event and to find the PetSmart store nearest you, visit http://pets.petsmart.com/adoptions/ or call 1-877-473-8762.

About PetSmart Charities®

PetSmart Charities, Inc. is a nonprofit animal welfare organization that saves the lives of homeless pets. More than 400,000 dogs and cats find homes each year through our adoption program in all PetSmart® stores and our sponsored adoption events. PetSmart Charities grants more money to directly help pets in need than any other animal welfare group in North America, with a focus on funding spay/neuter services that help communities solve pet overpopulation. PetSmart Charities is a 501(c)(3) organization, separate from PetSmart, Inc.

ABOUT PAWS AND CLAWS FELINE RESCUE

We started Paws & Claws Feline Rescue in 2009 and have saved almost 200 cats and kittens, which have been adopted into loving, "forever" homes.

We have also spayed and neutered all the adopted pets, as well as many others for people who could not afford to do so.

Our goal is to continue to save and adopt at least 100 cats and kittens a year and if our resources allow, to help more people to feed, care for, spay and neuter their cats.

Our 5th Anniversary Volunteer Lunch

Here are just a couple of photos from the Paws and Claws 5th Anniversary Volunteer Lunch at Cracker Barrel.  A good time - and good food - was had by all. Thank you all for celebrating with us and especially for your dedication and hard work!

Bo and Luna

Annie writes,

“Wanted to send you a couple pictures of our precious family!  We have officially re-named Alex and Ambria (gray tuxedo brother and sister)...their names are now "Bo" and "Luna". Bo has white on both sides of his nose and Luna has gray on one side (of her nose) and white on the other. Dear "Sweetie" will ALWAYS be Sweetie!!!!

Bo and Luna have been neutered, spayed and micro chipped. We had to wait on Sweetie because of an upper respiratory infection. That is probably a good thing considering my hobbling around in a boot cast!!! Also, Sweetie is the "sensitive" one and (I feel) will require a lot of attention.

All three get along so well! Today I've been upstairs working in the office and had a length of grosgrain ribbon for them to play with....Sweetie has taken it upon herself to drag the ribbon around while Bo and Luna chase it!!!!!! Up and down the stairs they went!!!! It was hilarious!!! Then Bo and Luna pooped out and are flopped out resting... Sweetie is still pulling the ribbon around complaining!!!!!

Terry and I couldn't be happier!!! The "kids" have such great personalities..... we love them all equally...a LOT!!!!!!!!!”

Some of our wonderful volunteers

Here is Jean (on the right) with our girls, Hannah, Leah, & Eli who help us at PetSmart.  They are great - very dedicated and hard-working, and we just love them!

The four orange tabbies are up for adoption and looking for their "forever families".

Adam and Stevie - another happy ending!

Adam and Stevie’s family writes:

“The boys are doing so good, they are running and playing, yesterday morning all four cats played, even my fat Juliet. I put their kitty condo together and they couldn't wait to play on it. They seem to be having fun exploring the house and having fun looking out our sliding glass doors at the birds. I love them so much, I love Adam who is a laid back boy who loves a cuddle and sleeps between my husband and me at night. I love little Stevie because he is the smallest and he is also the bravest, but he is very loving, too. I am sending these pictures so you can see that Adam is growing but little Stevie is growing, too. I am getting so many compliments about them on my Facebook page. I tell people where I got them from so I hope you get some new people coming in. “

They look very happy and healthy!

Volunteers Needed

Dear Friends of Paws & Claws Feline Rescue:

We are coming to the close of our fifth year in cat rescue and have been successful in rescuing and finding loving homes for over 500 cats and kittens.  We have three locations for adoptions including PetSmart and Cole's Cat & Dog Rescue in Statesville and Petco in Mooresville.

If we are to continue this wonderful work, we must have volunteers to help! Please find it in your heart to volunteer just one hour a week to help save the homeless cats and kittens so they will not be taken to animal control and euthanized!

We need cage cleaners in both PetSmart & Petco, as well as help on adoption Saturdays.  Please e-mail or call me today and volunteer so that Paws & Claws Feline Rescue may continue to save cats and kittens for the next five years!  It is important fulfilling work and the satisfaction of saving a life is so worthwhile!

Thank you for volunteering,
Jean Keiser, Director

Sammy

Another happy adoption story. Adorable little Sammy is obviously making himself at home and getting along well with his family.

Carl says, “He has been such a great kitten and a real joy in our lives. Thank you so much again!”

You are very welcome, Carl, and thank you for giving Sammy a loving forever home.

Please Help Tara!

tara

Meet Tara, a sweet, loving six-month old kitten who needs an eye operation. Last March a litter of four kittens were found in a shed after their mother had been killed by a car. One was already dead, the other three had very bad upper respiratory infections and we suspect Calicivirus, as sadly, Tara was the only one who survived.

Tara’s third eyelid had adhered to her cornea and when we had her spayed, it was loosened, however, it reattached upon healing. We took her to an eye specialist, Dr. Segal, at Carolina Veterinarian Specialty in Winston-Salem, and she said it could again be loosened, at which time they would put a contact lens in the eye so it will not reattach.

The cost for this operation is $600.00 and we were hoping some of our friends of Paws & Claws Feline Rescue may be needing a tax deduction at the end of the year and could donate to Tara so that she could have the operation.

Tara also needs her “Forever Home” if anyone has a place in their heart and home – she loves our collie dog and sleeps with her. Tara also gets along well with all the other cats and kittens.

Thank you to everyone who has generously donated, adopted, or volunteered this year to help us save almost one hundred cats and kittens. We couldn’t do it without you
!
Thank you!

A Little Help from Our Friends

We need your help. As we mentioned in a previous post, we will be at the Statesville PetSmart the first 3 weekends in December for photos with Santa and we need some fellow animal lovers to help us out. We anticipate a lot of participation and could use some extra hands.

If you are interested in helping please email Jean as soon as possible - catwoman168@roadrunner.com.

Also, we are badly in need of cage cleaners and would greatly appreciate if someone could help by cleaning the cages one day a week, morning or afternoon/evening.  It's really fun to interact with all the cats and kittens and not really very hard work at all.

Update on Sissy and Photos with Santa

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Kathy sent us an update on Sissy ( Isis ) – she said that she is doing wonderful and everything went great with her check-up.

Isn’t she gorgeous? Thank you, Kathy, for giving Sissy such a loving forever home.

Sissy1a

We also want to let you know that we will be at PetSmart in Statesville the first three Saturdays in December and we will be taking pictures with Santa. Photos are only $9.95 and the profits benefit Paws & Claws, so bring your fur babies to see Santa, and we would appreciate it if you would spread the word.

We will also be at Petco in Mooresville the 1st and 3rd Saturdays in December. We have lots of kitten for adoption – why not adopt a kitten (or 2) for Christmas? They would be so adorable under the tree and they would really appreciate having a warm, loving forever home.

Happy News

Kathy adopted Sissy (formerly known as Isis) and sent along this note and some photos to let us know how she was doing.

“Just wanted to send you a couple pictures of Sissy (Isis). She is adjusting wonderfully, I have been surprised at how well she is getting along with the dogs. As long as they respect her space and approach calmly she will let them sniff her & her them. She is still exploring and adjusting to the house but I know we made the right choice with her. I already had to make an album for her on Facebook to share pictures with family & friends.”

Sissy1Sissy3

Isn’t she beautiful?

In other news, we have had almost forty cats and kittens adopted since Aug. 1st!  We will be at PetSmart in Statesville and Petco in Mooresville Nov. 3rd and 17th.

We will be taking "Pictures with Santa" the first three Saturdays in December 11 am - 4 pm!  Come get your pet's picture taken with Santa!!

Lucky and Lily

Lucky and Lily are Leo’s siblings and they are happy in their forever home now. Leo was adopted by another family and is doing well. So are Lucky and Lily, as you can clearly see:

We have more adorable kitties waiting for the forever homes at PetSmart in Statesville, so stop by and adopt on (or more!) soon.

PetSmart National Adoption Weekend

PetSmart

Paws & Claws will be at the Statesville PetSmart on Saturday, September 15 from noon – 5pm and also on Saturday, September 29 from noon-5pm.

Paws & Claws will receive $35 in adoption-reward grants from PetSmart Charities for every pet adopted in stores during this event.

Paw & Claws is one of the more than 2,000 local animal welfare organizations that will be participating in National Adoption Weekend.

Animal-welfare organizations in all 1,210 PetSmart stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico will participate in the PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend.

In addition to the PetSmart store in Statesville, you can also visit the PetSmart Charities’ adoption centers inside any PetSmart store in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico.

If you’ve been thinking about adoption, consider saving the life of a cat or dog during the National Adoption Weekend event.

PetSmart Charities has helped nearly 5 million pets find homes through their in-store adoption program since 1994.

Another Happy Ending

Penny and Celia were adopted by Wendy and her husband and, as you will see, they are adorable little furbabies and very happy.

Wendy says, “Penny (yellow tabby), is now known as Marilyn, and Celia (calico) is now known as June-bug. They are such good friends with each other, I couldn't ask for better. My husband and I are honestly in love with these sweet fur-babies. :) Thank y'all for taking care of these sweet girls until my hubby and I could find them.

Beautiful Stacia

Vickie sent along a photo of her beautiful Stacia and had this to say:

Happy Birthday to our baby girl who is 1 year old today!  Thank you for nursing her when she was a baby and then allowing her to come to live with us.  She is loved by not only us, but her two brothers!  Thanks, Jean!

Isn’t she gorgeous?

Here are her two brothers:
